Complementary Therapies

We provide a range of complementary therapies which can contribute to the physical and emotional health and wellbeing of members. Families Moving On currently employs two experienced therapists with the necessary skills to support victims and survivors. Members can avail of the following therapies:

Reflexology

Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary therapy which reduces stress and promotes deep relaxation and wellbeing. It is a touch-based therapy founded on a theory that different parts of the hands, feet, lower legs, ears and face correspond with different parts of the body.

Aromatherapy Massage

The origins of massage therapy can be traced back thousands of years where ancient cultures believed in its medical benefits. Through manipulation of the body’s tissues, massage can help alleviate body stress and pain and reduce anxiety. It can also improve the mood and promote better sleep. It can improve flexibility, posture, circulation and aid digestion.

During an aromatherapy massage the therapist will select essential oils based on your needs. Thus, the overall purpose of aromatherapy is to improve physical and mental wellbeing. Some of the benefits of aromatherapy massage can include decreased anxiety, headache relief, improved circulation, reduced pain and inflammation, and many others.

Hopi Ear Candling

This treatment is suitable for members experiencing conditions related to the ears, nose, or throat. It is a natural and ancient therapy which can offer relief from conditions such as sinus problems, headaches, tinnitus, or wax build-up. Treatment may help reduce inflammation in the ears and sinuses, improve hay fever symptoms, rebalance the body’s natural flow and improve relaxation.

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head massage focuses on massaging acupressure points along the head, neck, and shoulders. It originates from Ayurveda, an alternative medicine system which believes the mind and body are intricately connected. It can relieve headaches, promote physical wellbeing, and improve emotional and mental health.

About Complementary Therapies

Complementary Therapies such as Massage, Reflexology and Aromatherapy are holistic in that they treat the individual on all levels of being – mind – body – spirit. When a treatment is given alongside receiving conventional medicine it is called complementary as it works in conjunction with the former. The provision of complementary therapies enables members to become more relaxed and alleviate pain from their body and mind. Recent feedback from this service has been positive with members stating:

“Enjoying the therapies 100%, feel lighter from having received them. Sleeping much better”

Many people regard using complementary therapies as a positive choice they can make for their health and well-being. FMO have learned that through pre and post evaluation of complementary therapies, the service users will tend to seek additional support such as befriending, counselling, onward referrals etc to assist them in their recovery.
